Melodic Improvisation

1. We will learn various kinds of scales, major, harmonic minor and the blues scales especially, and how to determine where to use them.
We will work with Fake Book charts which are reductions of scores that include only the melody and chord symbols, as well as written out jazz arrangements that I have created or which I like to use with my students. We will learn how to analyze the tune harmonically in order to determine the best scales and chord substitutes to use for improvisation.

1. How to read the symbols 2. How to voice chords 3. How to find substitutes for chords to make the harmony more interesting 4. How to analyze chords for purposes of improvisation. 5. How to create more interesting accompaniment parts through the use of bass notes and rhythmic structures that involve ways of making rhythm from the chords 6. How to improvise with chords
