At least for me, creativity is the most important dimension of
art. One must learn and teach the basic skills through which
creativity can be expressed of course, but in my opinion
creativity itself is inherently unteachable though it can
certainly be cultivated and nurtured. In other words I don’t
believe one must study composition or arranging or
improvisation for years and years before one can actually do
it.
Thanks partly to the digital technology we have available to
us now, teachers can facilitate the creative abilities of
children as young as 5 and 6 who, though they know nothing
about music theory are inherently creative and can still
compose beautiful music with proper guidance.
I have the scores to prove it!
In the context of teaching music, there is nothing quite so
sweet as when student and teacher, working together on a
composition try a new idea and playing it back realize at the
same exact moment that they have struck gold.
“Wow! I love it!” they shout in harmony, often punctuating
the smile of victory with the requisite fist bump.
Please take a moment and listen to the talented young
composers, ranging in age from 10 to 12 linked to their
Compositions.
